Hawaii Day 5 (Part 1 of Waimea Valley)

One of the items on my to do list when going to Hawaii was to hike to a waterfall. With the boys ages 7-2, it was going to have to be one that wasn't too far off the beaten path. We decided to go up to Waimea Valley, since it had a paved pathway the entire way and if needed a golf cart shuttle that goes from the park gate to the falls themselves. We enjoyed the walk through the gardens and saw some pretty amazing flora and animals, there were plenty of places to sit and rest for the boys and have a snack break as well.

A male peacock, you could hear them calling to each other all along the walk.

A memorial/shrine to their ancestors.

Some workers planting some taro plants, what poi is made from. The legend is that the first taro plant sprouted from the grave of the daughter of the gods and nourished their second born son.

Steps going up into the jungle.

A rooster, couldn't get the three hens in the picture. You see chickens roaming all over the island.

This tree was just full of these cute geckos...although they are quick and I only got one in the shot.

Flowers just hanging off the side of a rocky hillside.

First sight of the fall.
